What is ‘clean’ skincare? Why is everyone talking about it? This blog will sort the fact from the fiction and give insight into what ‘clean’ means to Dermalogica.

Where ‘clean’ skincare came from

This trend began many years ago and started out with the term ‘natural’. There was an increase in products being marketed as ‘natural’ and implied that the product had been made solely from botanical resources, without any use of chemical additives. It also infers that the natural ingredients used have not be processed or altered.

Unfortunately, because there is no real definition or regulation of natural products, the term has been used very loosely and inaccurately throughout the industry. The reality is the term ‘natural’ is meaningless.  In this marketing driven society where people are often touting that natural is better, we often lose sight of the fact that just because something is natural, it doesn’t mean it is better than something synthetic. Poison ivy is natural but that doesn’t mean you should rub it on your face.

Another point to consider is what is a chemical? And why have we been made to believe chemicals are bad? Everything is essentially chemicals. Everything is made from the same chemical elements, whether they are living or not. The idea that chemicals are bad for you is not great science! Since everything both natural and synthetic are chemicals. There is a real misinterpretation of the information.

The term ‘clean’ has now since risen in popularity in the same way and we want to set the record straight.

Dermalogica’s take on ‘clean’ skincare

Dermalogica aims to use both what nature and science has uncovered, to bring the most innovative formulas possible and real skin results.

We have always been proud of our results driven formulas.  We believe in the power of nature propelled by science. We do not claim to be a natural product, but we certainly believe that nature has a lot to offer.  Ingredient technology and science has progressed so much that we are able to deliver better ingredients more precisely to the skin for outstanding results and product performance.

Our overriding priority when developing our products is safety. This starts with being compliant with regulations on cosmetic products. Our products are formulated considering the laws and regulations of the countries in which we operate. That is over 106 countries currently! Our products are rigorously tested and reviewed by an independent third-party safety assessor as an extra safety measure.

We’ve been ‘clean’ since 1986

Some commonly used skin care ingredients are known to aggravate the skin, causing symptoms such as blackheads and sensitivity and even disrupt the skins protective barrier.

Skin health has always been at the forefront of everything we do, and we turned heads back in the 80’s because of the ingredients we chose to leave out of our products.

Our formulas have always been free of artificial colours, synthetic fragrance, mineral oils, lanolin, S.D. alcohol and formaldehyde. Over the years we have added to that list by removing microplastics, parabens, hydroquinone and phthalates.

We do understand that some of these ingredients, for example artificial colours aren’t always a challenge for every skin, but we ensure our products are packed full of ingredients that have real skin impact and are suitable for as many people as possible. After all, everyone deserves healthy skin!
